MIDDLE SCHOOL SPORTS
Head Coach: Chris Bremner
Chris recently graduated from Beloit College in Beloit, Wisconsin. During his four years, he played on the Men’s Basketball team, was heavily involved in the Student Athletic Advisory Committee and earned a B.A. in Studio Art. Before Beloit, Chris attended Shining Mountain Waldorf School from kindergarten through 12th grade. During middle school and high school he was a part of Shining Mountain Athletics competing in Basketball. Chris believes sports can be a vehicle to better oneself as an individual and also an incredibly fun way to spend your time!
Assistant Coach: Ilana Winchester
Ilana graduated from Shining Mountain in 2010. While at Shining Mountain she was a member of both the Middle School and High School cross-country and basketball teams. Ilana recently graduated from Lewis & Clark College in Portland, OR, where she earned a B.A. in Sociology/Anthropology, primarily focusing on K-12 education and education policy. Ilana believes that athletics are a perfect opportunity for students growth as individuals and as members of a larger community. Ilana is looking forward to sharing the wisdom and fun she experienced as a long time member of the Shining Mountain athletics program!
GIRLS VOLLEY BALL
Head Coach: Julia Emery
Julia graduated from Shining Mountain in 2008, and continued on to receive her Bachelor of Music Degree in Cello Performance at the University of Denver in 2013. Currently, she is a class teacher at Snow Lion Preschool, and teaches cello lessons throughout the Boulder/Denver area. Julia played volleyball and basketball at Shining Mountain in Middle School and High School, and also assistant coached both the Middle School basketball and High School volleyball teams. Julia hopes to share with her team the love and excitement she continues to feel for volleyball, which began for her at SMWS.

Denise recently resigned for her management job to get back in the classroom and on the court. Denise has a Master’s degree in Secondary education with an emphasis in History. Denise has taught at Fort Lupton High School, for the St. Vrain public school district and at Boulder High. She grew up playing basketball through high school and developed a love for the game through her relationship with her father who was a long time basketball coach.

Michael has been teaching and coaching at SMWS for 3 years. He grew up playing basketball through college and has coached MS seasons and summer camps. Michael is currently the 8th grade teacher and chair of the middle school support team. Michael enjoys teaching fundamentals, respect for the game, and guiding the boys toward discovering deeper relationships with each other.
Assistant Coach: Mischa Samson
Mischa graduated from SMWS’ 12 grade in 2009 and currently attends CU and works at Gateway fun center. Mischa played basketball for SMWS through high school and has coached seasons and summer camps. Mischa enjoys the team aspect of the game as well as a fast paced offense and an energetic defense.

Head Coach: Tyler Haughness
Tyler has been coaching for the past 4 years making this his fifth year here at Shining Mountain. He has a great approach and bases his coaching on having fun first. “I stress controllable outcomes, and learning from experiences during competition as well as practice.” Other coaching experience includes revolution-running coaching adults in running and Multisport for over 4 years. He has also been a running coach for first descents a nonprofit for marathon and half marathon training. “This in addition to working with youth for over 10 year has been the joy and passion of my life.”

Head Coach: Ashleigh Mounger
Originally from Chicago, Ashleigh is a new Colorado resident. She is a current doctoral student at the University of the Rockies pursuing a Doctor of Psychology degree with a concentration in Sports- Human Performance Psychology. Ashleigh has been playing volleyball for over 10 years at both the competitive and recreational level. “Volleyball is a true passion for me, because I love to coach and share my talents, while helping young athletes reach their performance goals and be successful both on and off the court.” She has also coached tumbling & trampoline for 10+ years and has competed at the junior Olympic level in power tumbling for 11 years. “Outside of coaching, I love being with family and friends, going shopping, reading books and I love to cook.”

Varsity Head Coach: Mike Hawkes
A true Colorado Native, Mike Hawkes was born in Denver and grew up in Arvada where he attended Pomona High School. A former and current student at the University of Northern Colorado, Mike is working on a Sociology degree. Sports have always been part of Mike’s life and coaching became a passion as his two sons moved up through the competitive soccer ranks. This passion grew as he began coaching his younger sister’s basketball team and ultimately took the position as the Varsity Head Coach for the SMWS Girls’ program. Two years later Mike has taken his dream job within our community as Athletic Director where he plans to continue the great work of those preceding him.

Varsity Head Coach: Sean Lynch
Sean Lynch played four years of varsity basketball at Santa Cruz High School in northern California. During his junior season his team won the California DIII state championship. Lynch has a wide-ranging, diverse coaching background with experience at both the high school and college level. Most recently, he served as an assistant coach for the women at Middlebury College. Lynch spends his summers coaching at youth basketball and tennis camps. Through many years of coaching, Lynch has developed a deep understanding of how to convert a group of individuals into a team and recognizes relationships as the most important factor in coaching.
