MIDDLE SCHOOL TRACK!!!
I am very excited to announce the inaugural season of our middle school Track & Field team, which will be accessible by our 6th, 7th and 8th graders. The team will begin practices on February 27, nearly coinciding with the high school season. There will be lunchtime practices throughout the week and one after school practice for most of the season.
The Athletic Department worked closely with the Middle School Support Team as we moved to make this a reality. As many of you know, during the spring our middle school students are also involved in our awesome Circus program. Through a collaborative effort, we have scheduled practices and meets so middle school students are able to participate in both programs rather than choosing one or the other. I, for one, will be excited to watch some of our circus performers also run the 400 or throw a discus, if they so choose.
Our middle school program will focus on allowing the athletes to explore the entire world of Track & Field rather than simply specializing. We will urge our kids to try running, jumping and throwing. Of course, we have created age appropriate guidelines and restrictions with respect to throwing as well as pole vaulting and hurdling. Our published mission is as follows: To mentor the team with love, to train each student according to their ability, to foster a supportive learning environment that promotes fun and friendship, and to inspire students to become great people, great students and good athletes.
Our next steps are to finalize our coaching staff (we have some very good candidates), begin registration, hold a parent meeting and begin an exciting season. If you would like your child to be involved and/or if you have any questions please either call me or send me an email. If this is the first SMWS team your child will be participating on this year you will need to get them in for an athletic physical prior to the first practice. If you are unable to make a timely appointment with your physician you can walk in to either the Walgreen’s or King Soopers in Lafayette and obtain a physical for less than $50.
I hope you all share in my excitement as we enter this new chapter in Shining Mountain Athletics!
Girls’ High School Basketball 2-a-Days!!!
The Colorado State XC Championships will be held Saturday, October 26 in Colorado Springs. Our girls run at 9:20am and our boy runs at 11:30am. Come down and cheer them on!!! This is the first time in school history that we have qualified a team for State.
Our middle school XC team participated in the State meet on 10/19. The team had an awesome season with numerous personal records and season bests. Check out this LINK for the girls’ results and this LINK for the boys’ results.
When your child’s Responsible Coach redefines “winner” through a mastery approach to coaching, reinforce the coach’s approach. Instead of focusing on the scoreboard, remember the ELM Tree of Mastery for Effort, Learning and Mistakes are OK (because mistakes help us learn, but fear of mistakes helps us fail).

HUTTON SHINES ON MOUNTAIN
The course at the Lyons High School felt a little tougher than it normally would have to Shining Mountain’s Ginger Hutton, who had little time to prepare after playing a late volleyball game against Belleview Christian on Friday night.
That hindrance didn’t stop the Lions junior from finishing in 20:10 to take second in the 2A/3A race behind Lyons’ Miriam Roberts.
“Racing against Miriam is fun. She is really fast,” Hutton said. “I was a little tired but I just wanted to run my heart out.”
Hutton teamed with Paisley Sheehan. Ella Baca and Miranda Seim to help the Lions finish eighth in the team scoring.
