MIDDLE SCHOOL ATHLETICS!!!
I’m truly excited to announce that 6th graders will now be able to participate in middle school sports. We will begin the 2014/15 school year by welcoming 6th graders onto our cross country team. That will be followed in the winter with 6th grade basketball teams managed by our athletic department and coached with our philosophies. Of course, our middle school track team will continue in the springtime. More details about each sport will be sent out as the school year approaches.
I hope you all share in my excitement as we enter this new chapter in Shining Mountain Athletics!
Congratulations to SMWS alum Birdie Hutton (SMWS Class of 2012). This summer she landed a biochemical research assistant internship at the University of Spain.
Girls’ High School Basketball 2-a-Days!!!
The Colorado State XC Championships will be held Saturday, October 26 in Colorado Springs. Our girls run at 9:20am and our boy runs at 11:30am. Come down and cheer them on!!! This is the first time in school history that we have qualified a team for State.
Our middle school XC team participated in the State meet on 10/19. The team had an awesome season with numerous personal records and season bests. Check out this LINK for the girls’ results and this LINK for the boys’ results.
When your child’s Responsible Coach redefines “winner” through a mastery approach to coaching, reinforce the coach’s approach. Instead of focusing on the scoreboard, remember the ELM Tree of Mastery for Effort, Learning and Mistakes are OK (because mistakes help us learn, but fear of mistakes helps us fail).

HUTTON SHINES ON MOUNTAIN
The course at the Lyons High School felt a little tougher than it normally would have to Shining Mountain’s Ginger Hutton, who had little time to prepare after playing a late volleyball game against Belleview Christian on Friday night.
That hindrance didn’t stop the Lions junior from finishing in 20:10 to take second in the 2A/3A race behind Lyons’ Miriam Roberts.
“Racing against Miriam is fun. She is really fast,” Hutton said. “I was a little tired but I just wanted to run my heart out.”
Hutton teamed with Paisley Sheehan. Ella Baca and Miranda Seim to help the Lions finish eighth in the team scoring.
