Juniors and Seniors who have been at Shining Mountain for at least one semester may be selected to join NHS. The official purposes of National Honor Society, as outlined in the NHS Constitution, are listed below, along with Shining Mountain’s specific requirements:
1. To create enthusiasm for Scholarship: NHS members must have attained a GPA of at least 3.33 through hard work and honest effort.
2. To stimulate a desire to render Service: NHS members serve as ambassadors for the school by speaking at school tours and parent events. A community service project is selected each year to serve our larger community and world beyond in response to specific, targeted needs.
3. To promote Leadership: NHS members will be asked to lead the high school in one of three areas: academic standards, student life, or environmental awareness and sustainability. Each applicant must be prepared to take an active role in one of these groups that will meet regularly, take initiatives that will improve the SMWS high school experience, and respond to the needs of faculty and the high school community when opportunities and challenges arise.
4. To develop Character: NHS members must show a commitment to exemplary behavior, courage, respect, clean living, and concern for others.
National Honor Society students serve as ambassadors for our school and help out with school tours and informational parent evenings. Recent past service projects include raising money for a hospital in Haiti and helping with the EFAA Food Drive.
