Shining Mountain Waldorf School

High School Academics

The guiding principle in the High School is the search for truth. Adolescents are idealistic and are seeking for ways to carry their yearnings into the world. Community service and a learning environment that fosters questioning and investigation stimulate a healthy relationship to the world at large. The history of art, architecture, biology, advanced mathematics, chemistry, geography, literature, and history are among the full range of academic subjects studied. Practical and fine arts engage adolescents in healthy activities that nurture their souls and provide creative outlets for self-expression. Competitive sports offer opportunities for team building and provide another arena for exploring their potential.

The Waldorf High School curriculum cultivates each student’s ability to think critically, organize, and present ideas clearly. Teachers are specialists who sharpen the growing intellectual skills of adolescents through a carefully crafted curriculum that designed to develop capacities in multiple intelligences: linguistic, logical-mathematical, interpersonal, intrapersonal, spatial, bodily kinesthetic, and musical.

Following the High School Morning Assembly, each day begins with a one hour and twenty minute Morning Lesson period devoted to intensive, in-depth study of an academic subject over the course of three to four weeks. The Morning Lesson is followed by track classes or electives that meet two to five times per week. These classes build skills in academics, the arts and movement. Extracurricular activities include sports, studio art, service learning projects, and drama.
