To celebrate National German Week, the whole high school and the 8th grade came together to enjoy delicious German food on a beautiful fall day. Tables decorated with the blue and white Bavarian flag and German Oompahpah music added to the atmosphere. Frau Blum cooked with all the HS German classes on Monday and Tuesday to prepare the food using German recipes. Seniors, Alec Evans and Meishan Wright, grilled all the brats and Smartdogs. Also on the menu were hotdogs, Kartoffelsalat (potato salad), Gurkensalat (cucumber salad), grünen Salat (green salad), Tomatensalat ( tomatoes and basil from the HS garden), Nudelsalat mit Zucchini (pasta salad with Zucchini), Rote Beeten (beets from the HS garden) and Sauerkraut. For dessert, there was watermelon along with a variety of German cakes: Apfelkuchen mit Streuseln (Apple Crumble Cake), verrückter Apfelkuchen (crazy apple cake which was glutenfree and dairyfree) and Bentheimer Kuchen (a Gugelhupf or Bundt cake made with almonds). All the apples came from the HS apple trees.
The high schoolers and the 8th grade enjoyed spending the lunchtime together. Thank you to the HS garden club who harvested the produce and to everyone else who baked, peeled, chopped, shopped, sliced, grilled and cleaned up. And a big thanks too to Boulder Sausage who donated the German Bratwurst.
