Middle School
Guiding the emerging individual through the years of growth and self-discovery
Meeting pre-adolescents at the Age of Discovery
The Waldorf middle school curriculum is specifically and intentionally designed to meet students during a crucial period of profound cognitive, social, physical, and personal transformation. As middle schoolers transition out of childhood, their internal orientation naturally evolves from experiential, feeling-based learning toward formal abstract reasoning, rigorous critical inquiry, and an authentic, deeply felt search for personal identity. To directly support, channel, and honor this internal shift, the middle school program introduces complex academic disciplines—including physics, inorganic chemistry, algebra, world geography, history, and three-dimensional perspective drawing—that directly mirror the student’s expanding intellectual curiosity, awakening sense of justice, and keen desire to understand cause and effect. By intentionally pairing this rigorous academic exploration with expressive artistic practice, hands-on scientific experiment, immersive outdoor education, and strong, empathetic mentorship from dedicated teachers who know them well, the program grounds students’ burgeoning independence and self-direction. Ultimately, this holistic foundation fosters essential emotional resilience, genuine social responsibility, creative problem-solving skills, and a lifelong passion for active, meaningful learning during these pivotal formative years.
Awakening independent thought, analytical rigor, and self-discovery
Sixth Grade
As sixth graders enter early adolescence, their world expands. Waldorf education meets this developmental leap by anchoring students with clear structure while inspiring curiosity about the universe. Through geology, physics, and astronomy, science mirrors their inner journey of exploring cause and effect.
History and geography trace ancient empires and global cultures, cultivating critical thinking and empathy. Meanwhile, practical math like business, metrics, and constructive geometry builds confidence and real-world skills.
Seventh Grade
As seventh graders experience rapid physical and mental growth, their desire for independence blooms. Waldorf education meets this awakening by channeling their growing discernment into deep self-discovery. Through Renaissance history and the Age of Exploration, students see how individual convictions shape the world, while creative writing fosters vibrant self-expression.
Science explores mechanics and human biology, helping students understand their changing bodies. Meanwhile, algebra, geometry, and African geography cultivate logical thinking and broad global awareness.
Eighth Grade
As eighth graders seek independence and a voice, Waldorf education channels this drive toward leadership and personal responsibility. Studying modern revolutions, the Civil War, and impactful historical biographies honors their desire for change while showing how individual actions shape society.
Science in chemistry, physics, anatomy, and meteorology grounds their critical thinking. Advanced math like algebra, Platonic solids, and scientific notation, paired with creative arts, prepares students academically and emotionally for high school.
Specialty subjects & enrichment programs
In addition to the core academic curriculum, middle school students actively engage in our full range of specialty programming—from music and practical arts to world languages and movement. We also introduce Cyber Civics and Conscious Technology, a program specifically designed for pre-adolescents as they navigate digital spaces, fostering digital literacy, online safety, and healthy, intentional technology habits at a critical age of social development. Rather than viewing these subjects as optional electives, we integrate them as essential pillars of daily learning to nurture the whole student. By balancing physical craft, artistic expression, digital responsibility, and intellectual discovery, this holistic approach builds strong academic foundations alongside deep emotional resilience, critical thinking, and social confidence.
